News Our disability news section will provide any disability related news, events or announcements about people, government, equipment, culture, and etc.

All news, events or announcements will have something to say about living with a disability and create awareness and positive attitudes toward disabilities in our society. We would like to have news, events or announcements that deal with the rights of people with disabilities, eliminating inequality and discrimination, and issues of self-help and consumer advocacy.

We invite people from all over United States to participate in our news section. If you see any current news, events or announcements with a valid present on the web that is relevant to disability, we would love to hear from you. The U.S. Department of the Treasury is retiring the paper Social Security check for millions of baby boomers and others applying for federal benefits, a move that will save taxpayers $1 billion over the next 10 years. Beginning May 1, 2011, anyone newly applying for Social Security, Veterans Affairs or other federal benefits will need to choose an electronic payment method – paper checks will no longer be an option. People currently receiving their federal benefits by paper check must switch to direct deposit by March 1, 2013.

Great invention: Mitsubishi Electric has developed an elevator [JP] that can not only be fully voice-controlled but also automatically detects people sitting in wheelchairs. The Icon wheelchair will be more comfortable than anything else now on the market, according to Christian Bagg, who helped design the chair. "It's super adjustable, it's modular and it has suspension," Bagg said. These features allow the chair to adapt to a user's changing needs — something traditional wheelchairs simply can't do, he said.
